According to Blank on Blank, John discussed his attitude toward the lyrics of The Beatles’ “All You Need Is Love.” “I still believe in the fact that love is what we all need, what makes us all so desperate, [inaudible], or whatever the word, neurotic, etc., etc.,” he said. “But I still believe there’s many ways of getting to that situation, you know. There’s a lot of changes in society to come before we can ever get to a state of even realizing that love is what we need, you know.”

John noted some fans felt The Beatles didn’t live up to the lyrics of “All You Need Is Love.” “But I still believe in it, and there are some rude cracks about ‘Oh Beatles sang ‘All You Need is Love,’ but it didn’t work for them, you know,’” he said. “But nothing will ever break the love we have for each other and I still believe all you need is love [crosstalk] I don’t have to live with three guys to prove that love is the basic necessity of all of us, you know.”

“All You Need Is Love” became a massive hit for The Beatles. The song lasted on the Billboard Hot 100 for 11 weeks. It spent one week at the top of the chart. Subsequently, the track was on The Beatles’ compilation album 1. 1 lasted 504 total weeks on the Billboard 200 and eight weeks at No 1.

The Beatles’ “All You Need Is Love” became popular in the United Kingdom too. According to The Official Charts Company, the song remained on the U.K. chart for 13 weeks. It topped the chart for three weeks. Meanwhile, 1 lasted 347 total weeks on the chart and nine weeks at No. 1.

Notably, “All You Need Is Love” had an impact on pop culture outside of its time on the charts. Ewan McGregor sang part of the song in the “Elephant Love Medley” from Moulin Rouge!. The snippet of the song appeared in the stage adaptation of the movie. The track was also in Across the Universe, the Beatles-themed jukebox musical. One Direction even covered the song. Regardless of fans’ reaction to it, “All You Need Is Love” remains a classic track.
