Gal Gadot has confirmed that the script for Wonder Woman 3 is currently in development. An Israeli model and actress, in 2004 Gadot was crowned as Miss Israel and competed in the Miss Universe contest. In 2008, Gadot auditioned for the role of Bond girl Camille Montes in 2008’s Quantum of Solace but eventually lost the role to Olga Kurylenko. Shortly after, however, Gadot was selected by the same casting director to make her film debut in 2009’s Fast & Furious.
When Gadot was later cast by Zack Snyder to play Diana Prince/Wonder Woman in 2016’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, her selection was the subject of some measure of fan criticism. This was largely due to her slight frame compared to Diana’s Amazonian warrior physique depicted in the comics. Gadot’s 2017’s solo outing in Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman, however, put a sudden halt to concerns about Gadot’s ability to do the role justice, and was widely regarded as the strongest entry in the burgeoning DCEU. Yet when last year’s sequel Wonder Woman 1984 was simultaneously released in theatres and on streaming via HBO Max, Gadot’s return to the role was not anywhere near as widely praised as its far more successful predecessor.
Most recently, Gadot spoke with Variety while promoting her upcoming Netflix film Red Notice, which she stars in alongside Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds. During a promotional event for the film, the star was questioned her about progress on the fast-tracked Wonder Woman threequel. When asked when audiences may expect the film, Gadot said “I can’t tell you yet, but we’re working on the script.” She also joked that she couldn’t let any potential plot details out “because people will come off the roof and take me away.”
While Wonder Woman 3 is still yet to be given an official release date, Jenkins has previously suggested that the wait between the second and third films will be longer than the delay between Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984. With Jenkins currently working on the next big-screen Star Wars spinoff, Rogue Squadron, due for release in December 2023, it is likely production may not even get properly underway until 2024 at the earliest. Of course, Gadot will likely have plenty to keep her occupied until then, as not only is she slated to appear in next year’s Agatha Christie mystery Death on the Nile, but she has also just been cast as the Evil Queen in Disney’s live-action Snow White.
When the time does come for shooting to get underway, one thing fans will be keen to see is what time period the film will be set in. While the last two films have both been period pieces set long before the events depicted in Batman V Superman and Justice League, it will be interesting to see Dianna’s story push the greater narrative of the DCEU forward by placing it within a modern setting. No doubt diehard DC fans will also be keeping their fingers crossed the Wonder Woman 3 strikes a better chord with audiences than the second film did.
